Thoughts in the Roots

3 April - 7 September 2025

Serpentine South, London

From April 3 at the Serpentine Galleries in London, it will be possible to visit Thoughts in the Roots, the most comprehensive institutional exhibition of Penone in the United Kingdom, curated by Claude Adjil and Hans Ulrich Obrist with Alexa Chow. The exhibition, featuring works from 1969 to the present, extends into the surrounding Kensington Park with the installation of three bronze trees. Conceived by the artist in order to create, between indoors and outdoors, two integrated gardens, Thoughts in the Roots is also a sensory journey in which the scent of the leaves of Respirare l’ombra and the flagrancy of the resin in the hollow trunk of Spazio di luce will allow the space of the Serpentine South to be perceived in continuum with the nature of the park.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with Penone's previously unpublished drawings and “Albero folgorato,” a limited edition of 40 copies numbered and signed by the artist.

Giuseppe Penone. Impronte di luce

26 October – 16 February 2025
Fondazione Ferrero, Alba

From 26 October to 16 February 2025 Fondazione Ferrero presents Giuseppe Penone. Impronte di luce, an extensive anthological exhibition of over one hundred works, conceived by the artist and the curator, Jonas Storsve, specifically for the spaces of the Foundation. The main theme is the imprint, declined through a vast series of techniques and materials, but in the nine exhibition rooms there are other great themes of Penone's artistic research: the memory of contact, the equal relationship between man and nature, the negative-positive tension in sculpture, the centrality of the sculptor's gesture. At the end of the itinerary, will be showed, for the first time in Italy, a large selection of the Impronte di Luce (Imprints of Light) canvases, born from Penone's reflection on the work of Le Corbusier.

Arte Povera at Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection

9 October 2024 – 20 January 2025

Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection, Paris

The bronze tree Idee di pietra - 1532 kg di luce by Giuseppe Penone, installed in front of the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, introduces visitors to the Arte povera exhibition at the Pinault Collection. The event, curated by Carolyn Christov Bakargiev, celebrates the great masters of Arte Povera, reaffirming the importance in today's world of the concepts that inspired the protagonists of the movement of international scope theorized at the end of the 1960s by the critic Germano Celant. In addition to the works of the thirteen artists, which can be admired until 20 January 2025, the exhibition presents photographs, catalogues, books and archive material.
The art of Giuseppe Penone is present with some of the artist's most significant works: the trees of Alpi Marittime, chosen for the cover of the exhibition catalogue, Essere fiume, Patate, Soffio, Gesti vegetali are just some of the seminal works on show that confirm the artist's roots in Arte Povera, developed in an original and autonomous language.

Giuseppe Penone. Hands - Earth - Light - Colors

May 3 – June 29, 2024
Marian Goodman Gallery, New York

On view in New York is a selection of works that testifies to the continuity of Penone's reflection on the theme of the imprint, the artist's contact and action on matter, from his early works - represented here by the series Coincidenza di immagini (Coincidence of Images, 1970-1973) and Svolgere la propria pelle (To Unroll One’s Skin, 1970) - until today. In the plaster of the Cocci (Shards, 1979-1982), in the bronze of Geometrie nelle mani (Geometries in Hands, 2005), as well as in the terracotta of Avvolgere la terra - il colore nelle mani (To Envelop the Earth - The Colour in Hands, 2014), the memory of the gesture is preserved and the sculpture is originated as a cast of the negative of the hand. In the latter works, exhibited here for the first time, the imprint left by the artist in a handful of clay, enlarged in the shapes suspended by a steel cable, is revealed through the red, light pink, yellow and blue of Le Corbusier's chromatic palette, the same that is translated in the canvases of Impronte di luce (Imprints of Light, 2023).
