Giuseppe Penone. Impronte di Luce

October 16 – December 22, 2023
Gagosian, Paris

The exhibition that opens these days in Paris (Gagosian, rue de Ponthieu) is focus on a recurrent theme of Penone’s artistic research, the imprint, now explored through a series of new drawings and paintings entitled Impronte di Luce (Imprints of Light). The gestures of the hands imprinted on paper with ink and transported onto canvas by using Le Corbusier’s chromatic palette, enlarged within the perfect proportions of a square, reveal themselves as unexpected images of bodies, to be compared with the tormented forms of a past work, Maldoror (1986-1988).

Giuseppe Penone. Universal Gestures

March 14 – May 28, 2023

Galleria Borghese, Rome

Gesti universali (Universal Gestures) is the exhibition curated by Francesco Stocchi shown at the Galleria Borghese, where the relationship between art and nature that marks Francesca Cappelletti's direction and the poetics of Giuseppe Penone, creates an itinerary consisting of more than thirty works. In four rooms of the Gallery and in the gardens, Penone investigates the relationship between man and the surrounding matter, integrating the mineral world of statues from the collection with the organic and olfactory world of Respirare l’ombra [To Breath the Shadow] and Soffio di foglie [Breath of Leaves], the tactile sensitivity of Bernini with Pelle di cedro [Skin of Cedar] and Pelle di marmo e spine d’acacia [Marble Skin and Acacia Thorns]. Other series, including Alberi scortecciati [Debarked Trees] and Gesti vegetali [Vegetal Gestures] represent great themes of Giuseppe Penone’s practice: the questioning on sculpture and on the artist’s gesture, the relationship between time of nature and historical time as well as the dialogue, already present in ancient statuary and Baroque, between landscape, sculpture and nature.

Giuseppe Penone. Dessins

2022, October 19 – 2023, March 6
Centre Pompidou - Musée national d'art moderne, Paris

In 2020, Giuseppe Penone donated to the Musée national d'art moderne in Paris an important corpus of 328 drawings, covering fifty years of activity from 1967. A selection of these drawings, some of which have never been shown before, is now presented to public in an exhibition that develops thematically, illustrating the stages of Penone's artistic career. As testimony to the value of drawing in the process of creation, four works from the Pompidou collection, chosen in relation to the drawings, are also included, as well as two other works by the artist that give back a complete sampling of the favorite materials of his art: wood, stone, clay, bronze and leaves.
